This is the next generation BMW 6 Series Convertible, caught testing before it is unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in September. It goes in sale in the middle of 2011.
The current 6 Series divides opinion because of its highly controversial styling - which hasn't mellowed much since a 2003 debut. As such, BMW has toned down the flamboyance for the third-generation 6 Series, making it more a classy, luxury GT than an overt sports car.
It's a move that mimics the new 5 Series saloon, which is noticeably more comfortable, conservative and spacious than its predecessor.
The 6 Series' styling takes inspiration from the 2007 BMW CS Concept, as well as the recent Gran Coupe Concept, unveiled in April in
That car had four-doors - where as the 6 Series has just two - but by the look of these spy shots the front and rear of the 6 Series will be very similar indeed. BMW is thought to be planning a four- or five-door 6 Series too, which will add practicality and compete with the Porsche Panamera and forthcoming Audi A7.
Rumour has it that the cloth top you see in these pictures could actually be concealing the 6 Series' biggest change - a folding hard top. That would give the Convertible more refinement during day-to-day use, more in keeping with the luxury feel BMW wants for the newcomer.
The engine line-up will remain similar to the current car, with six-cylinder turbocharged petrol and diesel engines. A 630i and 650i pairing will make up the petrol range, while diesels will be badged 630d and possibly 640d. It's thought there will be no flagship M6 this time around, however.
