The latest incarnation of the 2.0-litre TDCi diesel engine is smooth and exceptionally strong. It has so much pull that you’d never know this is such a big, heavy car. For even more grunt, there’s the 2.2-litre diesel: an absolute powerhouse of an engine that makes the Mondeo seriously quick. The 2.0-litre Ecoboost petrol engine is available in two states of tune, and both give enough performance to give many a hot hatch a run for its money.

The Mondeo is all things to all people: on the motorway, the car feels perfectly at ease; and the ride remains silky smooth regardless of the road surface or how many people are on board because the suspension is supple and immaculately controlled. To cap it all, the Mondeo is exceptionally agile for such a large car, and keen drivers love its sharp handling, ample grip and responsive steering.

Only the merest flutter of wind noise is noticeable at the national limit, and although some road noise does intrude over coarse surfaces, it’s never a major annoyance. Engine refinement is equally impressive, and in a Mondeo, you even appreciate the weighting of the controls: from the snick of the wiper stalk to the flow of the gearshift, the Mondeo has a precision that few, if any, rivals can match.
